Shelf Pin FAQ

Shelf Pin seats into a line-bored hole to carry cabinet, bookcase, or glass shelves at an adjustable height. It is specified by pin diameter and the matching drilling hole size.

Shelf pins (or shelf supports) are small metal or plastic pegs that seat into bored holes in the cabinet side to hold an adjustable shelf. They come in pin, spoon, and L-shaped styles.

Glass shelf supports have a cushioned or clamped seat that grips the glass edge without metal-to-glass contact, used in display cabinets and bathroom cabinets.

Choose the pin diameter (5mm is standard, 1/4" common in the US), the support style (pin, spoon, or concealed), the shelf material (wood or glass), and the load per shelf. Use the 32mm system hole spacing for adjustability.

Match the pin to your bored hole: 5mm pins for 5mm holes (the global standard), or 1/4" pins for 1/4" holes (common in US casework). Heavier shelves use a larger pin or more support points.

A 5mm shelf pin needs a 5mm hole; a 1/4" pin needs a 1/4" hole. Drill to a consistent depth (about 10mm) and use the 32mm system spacing so shelves are adjustable.

Load depends on the pin material and number of supports. Steel pins on four points carry typical cabinet and bookcase shelves; for heavy loads use metal pins and add support points.

Common materials include Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, Zinc Alloy, Aluminum, Brass, Copper. The right material for shelf pin depends on load, corrosion exposure, and target price.

Available finishes include Matte Black, Brushed Nickel, Satin Nickel, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Antique Brass. Finish affects appearance, corrosion resistance, and cost.

Line-bore the cabinet sides at 32mm spacing with a jig, insert the pins at the chosen height, and seat the shelf. For glass, add the cushioned seat so the pin does not touch the glass directly.
